Ranting on the LCBO’s Food & Drink Magazine

December 13, 2021 Posted by Ted McIntyre Wine 1 Comment

Full disclosure—my parent company used to publish Vines magazine, a national wine publication edited by noted Canadian wine writer Chris Waters, now the wine and spirits columnist at The Globe and Mail, among other duties.

Vines isn’t around anymore. While much of the world’s print media has experienced a premature demise due to the onset of the digital age, Vines, like others in its genre, really never had a chance.

That particular genre is the Ontario food and beverage industry, where we currently have a 600-pound gorilla dominating the spot—the LCBO’s Food & Drink.

It’s awesome! Beautiful production values, top-shelf photography, great writing. And the new edition is a whopping 286 pages of all things alcohol and food as we celebrate the holiday season!

You should be very proud.

Because you’re paying for it.

Every time I see this magazine it’s a reminder of how Ontario taxpayers are subsidizing a publication that’s singularly preventing any possible publishing competition in the wine and spirits field in this province—waters that many would love to wade into. Food & Drink’s ad costs and subscription rates are ridiculously low, given the circulation and the production/printing costs, thereby discouraging any start-up from daring to compete.

Ever wonder why there’s no Canadian equivalent to Wine Spectator, Decanter or Bon Appétit in Ontario? Well here you have it.

Please…. put some good old tasty, Canadian recipes back in your magazine! I am sick of tofu, kale, lentils, beans, quinoa and other bland meals that you seem to completely fill your magazine with over the past few years. I love food from other countries, but could you please give us some good Canadian tasty recipes using our traditional foods. There are millions of Canadian people that were brought up on good old meat and potatoes, and we’re not interested in things like black-eyed peas and kale soup, or Dal () with yoghurt & kachumber (whatever that is…). Sorry, but I just had to vent…. I have Food & Drink magazines back to the 90’s. I loved them. Now, I’m lucky if I can even find an appetizer that interests me. Please, just sprinkle a couple of good ol’ Canadian comfort food recipes using our Canadian products! Otherwise, I will leave the magazine for others.

About

Here at The Lush Life, we value the finer things in life. That can mean a $2,000-per-night resort suite in Fiji, but also an undervalued $15 bottle of Ontario Cabernet Franc. It can be an unforgettable round of golf in the winds of Northern Ireland with your closest friends, or a transcendental open-air, moonlit experience alone at a spa in Scottsdale. Whatever the experience, the reviews are honest, informative and, hopefully, fun to to read, watch and listen to. If you love great wine, travel and golf, this is the place. And we want The Lush Life to be interactive, so let us know what you think.
