Two Reds to Warm Your Weekend

January 22, 2021 Posted by Ted McIntyre Wine 1 Comment

The forecast is for a chilly weekend here in Ontario, but here’s a pair of reds to warm your insides—one of which is available tomorrow, while you’ll have to keep watch for the other at the winery.

Bodegas Atalaya Laya 2018 — Almansa, Spain ($17.95)

On shelves tomorrow at the LCBO, this is a well-priced blend of 70% Garnacha Tintorera (a rich, inky-dark native grape to the region) and 30% Monastrell (a.k.a. Mourvèdre or Mataró) from Spain’s Almansa district, grown in limestone-rich soils at elevations of 700 to 1,000 metres. Expect a bit of leather, toast, smoke and a hint of leafy eucalyptus on the nose. While there’s only four months of oak aging, the oak spice is distinct, but it nicely complements a palate of dark red fruit that leans to the plummy side. There’s also some espresso layered in. Medium+ in body, there are nice tannins on the finish and better than average length. Not hugely complex but no weak links at all, and complex for the price. 89

Kacaba 2018 Reserve Cabernet Franc — Vineland, Ontario ($49.95)

They’re still working through their 2016 Reserve Cab Franc inventory at Kacaba right now, so you won’t find the 2018 vintage on the website just yet. But it’s definitely worth dropping them a line to see if they can put a bottle or two aside for you. Kacaba specializes in big reds, and this one dazzles. The dance of dark fruit includes a measure of raspberry, strawberry and blueberry and an explosive, savoury sour black cherry. There’s some of that pepper you’d expect from Ontario Cabernet Franc, with fresh herbs adding to the spice package. While there’s lots of aging potential, the current product is really well balanced, with the 14.9% alc. never obvious on the palate. And if you’re timing its lingering finish, pull up a chair—it’s going to take a while. 92

About

Here at The Lush Life, we value the finer things in life. That can mean a $2,000-per-night resort suite in Fiji, but also an undervalued $15 bottle of Ontario Cabernet Franc. It can be an unforgettable round of golf in the winds of Northern Ireland with your closest friends, or a transcendental open-air, moonlit experience alone at a spa in Scottsdale. Whatever the experience, the reviews are honest, informative and, hopefully, fun to to read, watch and listen to. If you love great wine, travel and golf, this is the place. And we want The Lush Life to be interactive, so let us know what you think.
